Before Sugaring: Preparing Your Skin

  1. Cleanse Thoroughly:
Ensure the area to be treated is clean and free from oils, lotions, and dirt. Sugar Squared's loofah soaps are perfect for this—they not only cleanse but also gently exfoliate the skin, removing dead cells and leaving the skin smooth and ready for sugaring.
  2. Exfoliate Gently:
Exfoliating the skin a day or two before your DIY sugaring session helps to remove dead skin cells, allowing the sugar paste to adhere better to the hair. Use a gentle scrub or exfoliating glove, avoiding harsh scrubs that could irritate the skin.
  3. Avoid Sun Exposure:
Sunburned or irritated skin is more sensitive and prone to damage during sugaring. It's best to avoid sun exposure for at least 24 hours before your session. If your skin is sunburned, wait until it has fully healed before sugaring.
  4. Check for Skin Sensitivity:
If you have sensitive skin, consider doing a patch test with a small amount of sugar paste on a less sensitive area to ensure your skin reacts well.
  5. Avoid Moisturizers and Oils:
On the day of your sugaring session, avoid applying any creams, lotions, or oils to the area being treated. These can create a barrier that makes it harder for the sugar to adhere to the hair.
  6. Keep Skin Hydrated:
While you should avoid moisturizers on the day of, it's important to keep your skin hydrated in the days leading up to your session. Well-hydrated skin is more resilient and can handle the sugaring process better.

After Sugaring: Caring for Your Skin

  1. Avoid Heat and Sweat:
Right after using your DIY sugaring jar, your skin will be sensitive and prone to irritation. Avoid hot tubs, saunas, hot baths, and any other sources of heat that could cause sweating for at least 24 hours. Skip exercise that might cause sweating and irritation to the sugared area for the same period. Refrain from exfoliating the skin for at least 24 hours after sugaring, and avoid applying products that contain alcohol, fragrances, or harsh chemicals. If you’ve sugared your face, it's best not to apply makeup or skincare products unless they are all-natural or contain soothing ingredients like aloe vera.
  2. Soothe the Skin:
If the sugared area feels tender or irritated, apply a cool cloth or compress to soothe the skin. You can also use a thin layer of hydrocortisone cream if you experience redness or irritation. Applying aloe vera gel or all-natural products specifically designed for post-sugaring care can help to hydrate and soothe the skin. Wearing loose, breathable clothing after sugaring can prevent friction and irritation on the treated area.
  3. Avoid Sun Exposure:
Stay out of direct sunlight and avoid tanning beds for at least 24-48 hours. The skin is more susceptible to damage after sugaring, and sun exposure can lead to hyperpigmentation or irritation.
  4. Wait to Shave or Tweeze:
Refrain from shaving or removing stray hairs immediately after sugaring. Let your skin rest and recover fully before considering any additional hair removal methods.

24-48 Hours After Sugaring: Maintaining Smooth Skin

  1. Exfoliate Regularly:
Once the initial sensitivity has subsided, begin exfoliating the sugared area every few days to prevent ingrown hairs. Dry brushing is particularly effective as it gently removes dead skin cells and encourages healthy skin renewal.
  2. Hydrate and Moisturize:
Keep the skin moisturized with a gentle, fragrance-free lotion or oil. Well-hydrated skin not only feels softer but also helps in preventing ingrown hairs.
  3. Continue to Avoid Irritants:
For the first few days post-sugaring, continue to avoid products that may irritate the skin, such as those containing strong fragrances, alcohol, or harsh chemicals.
  4. Protect Your Skin:
If you must be in the sun, make sure to apply sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your newly sugared skin from UV damage.
